Happy 2021 // 5 Things I Do to Prepare for the New Year
Updated: Dec 31, 2021
I don't know about y'all, but I love the beginning of the year. I love the idea of a clean slate, a fresh start, and starting anew. I don't know why, but I get so excited-- I even consider January my favorite month of the year. That being said, I wanted to share with you guys five things I do at the end/beginning of each year to prepare for the coming year. I'm a huge believer in being as prepared as possible, so I always set aside time to get my mind right, find my zen, and figure out the start of the year.
1. Pick my word.
A few years ago, I saw someone post about how they pick a word for each year, and try to live that way. People pick words like fearless, bold, or compassionate. Personally, in 2021 I am choosing the word "faithful", because I want my faith to be the leading factor in everything I say and do in this upcoming year. I think this can help set a good tone for your year, and instead of making a bunch of unrealistic expectations for yourself, you can simply try and lead your life by your word.
2. Make a schedule.
Another thing I love to do is to make a daily schedule. I am someone who has to plan things out before they happen otherwise my mind is all over the place during the day. I like to have a strict schedule to follow so I can stay on track and make sure I am doing what I need to do. Obviously I can't plan a schedule for the whole year, so I try to do it for the first semester. I also like to put all of my to-dos for the next day or week in my planner the night before, so they're all in one place and I don't forget anything.
3. Pick my goals.
I consider myself a very goal-oriented person, but sometimes I over do it. I want to check off all of the goals in every area in my life but that's not always feasible. I find it is much easier to pick a few goals in certain areas of your life. Relationship, social, personal, spiritual. These are areas I really try and focus on, as I find they are the most important to me in trying to improve and grow in my life.
4. Don't share my goals.
This one is a very recent thing I started doing, because if you know me, you know I am a talker. I love to tell everyone, everywhere what is going on and what I am planning in my life. This year I am going to take a different approach. I am going to keep my goals to myself and just accomplish them. Telling people your goals is not only leaving people expectant of you accomplishing them, but also putting an unnecessary pressure on yourself to get things done so that you "prove yourself". Keep things to yourself and remember that the only person you have to impress is yourself!
Forget spring cleaning, I'm cleaning now! Starting the year in a clean space is by far the best thing you can do for yourself. I am always more productive in a clean environment so this is one of my favorite things to do each year. Plus, it just helps to start the year off on the right track. If you take anything from this list, PLEASE clean your space. It really, truly helps. Also, try and clean up as you go throughout the year. It makes the deep cleaning days a lot shorter if you've already picked up a bit.
Happy New Year, you guys, and I hope this helps make things a little more organized and starts you off on the best foot for the year.
Love you all,
